How long can I wear the hair extensions?

PDF Print E-mail

Strand-by-strand hair extensions can usually be worn for 4-6 months although a few factors might make a difference in wearing them longer than this or removing the hair extensions sooner.

The length of time you can, or choose to, wear your hair extensions can depend on:

  • your hair extension care
  • what you are comfortable with
  • how quickly your hair grows
  • how often you wash your hair extensions
  • or a list of other issues

Most bonds will last indefinitely which will allow you to wear them for 4-6 months, as long as most strand-by-strand methods, if you like. As with other hair extension systems, your hair can tangle if you let it grow out too long.  With this hair extension system you can monitor, and maintain, these issues by taking your hair extensions out every so often and reapplying them.

As well, too long hair extension wear can be harmful to your own hair as well and cause your scalp to become dry. 12-16 weeks of extension wear allows you lower maintenance than some processes yet allows you to higher maintain the quality and integrity of your own hair and scalp.

Guide For Length Of Time To Wear My Hair Extensions

Under 4 weeks:If you are looking for temporary extension wear, maybe for a special event, but are not interested in long term, or more permanent, hair extension wear you can absolutely remove the extensions even a short time after putting them in.  Do note that the extension bond removes easier after washing and wearing for a few days. (Find our quick and easy removal tips here.)
4-6 weeks If you color your hair beyond just a root touch-up (which you can do while wearing the hair extensions)  Remember that your hairs which are held in a bond will not change color thus, for a full head coloring, it is recommended you remove your extensions and then replace after you have dyed your natural hair.
6-8 weeks:If your hair grows quite quickly or grown out bonds tend to be annoying to you, you may want to remove your hair extensions at the 6-8 week point.  If your hair is a bit on the damaged side, i.e. has been bleached and/or over processed, this is a good point for you to remove the hair extensions to care for your own hair and scalp.  A nourishing hair treatment or deep condition is a great idea in-between your extension hair installs.  This can help baby your fragile, brittle hair back to health.
10-12 weeks:If you have slower growing hair that is moderately to quite healthy, you should be just fine going 3 months with your hair extension wear.  This may be the most I would recommend for optimal wear and styling ability with the extensions.  Beyond this point you must be aware of the amount of care needed for safe, optimal, and comfortable hair extension wear.
Beyond 12 weeks:If your hair is healthy and you are very good to untangle your grown out strands almost daily, you can comfortably wear the hair extensions for many, many months.
The longest? Most of your bonds will remain completely intact until you remove them. One customer reports wearing the TemBond® successfully and without losing a single bond for 9 months.  That's got the MANEMAXX™ Book of Records!  Find Tiffany Twist's 6 month Regal Remi install, too. Seriously, though, be wise about the length of your wear, use your good judgement and don't push it too long... your refill TemBond® is way too cheap for that!!  Care for your hair!  As good as it feels to get that hair in, it feels pretty great to scrub your scalp and get a nice long condition.  The hair will be there ready to wear again after you've had your breather!
