If you’ve done any research elsewhere on hair extensions, you may have already read about the hairs you shed while wearing hair extensions. Shed hairs have nothing to do with the hair extensions themselves as you shed your own hair every day no matter what you do, and a whopping 50-100 hairs a day are claimed on average, but while wearing, and then when removing, the hair extensions, you may see the shed hairs at one time and all together which can, at first, be disturbing.
Shed hairs are not an excuse to disclaim hair loss or damage from particular methods of applying hair extensions, though, and this article will outline how to identify, understand and monitor your shed hairs.

Any bond left in your hair after removing the extensions is held in your hair by these shed hairs, which have tangled around root hairs due to washing and wearing. Once you carefully comb out 100 of these you will have a small ball of shed hairs you will discard after your removal. Once your hair is cleaned it will be ready for reapplying of the extensions.
What are shed hairs? These are hairs that were growing from your head and are let go by your folicles. It is a completely natural process, the same as sloughing off dead skin cells. There are 50 to 100 hairs a day that could be being "let go" by your hair folicles. Many of those hairs shed while you are wearing bonded, strand-by-strand hair extensions, remain caught in your bonds until you remove them. These may not be as noticeable when removing your extensions after a few weeks, but become quite noticeable after many months. While wearing the extensions, you can sometimes see the white “bulbs” from the shed hairs on a canvas of dark hair but will find them less noticeable in blonde hair. Understanding shed hairs
The natural hair has been shed at the root which leaves a small, hard bead at the tip of the natural hair. The extension doesn’t do this, it is a natural process, just as you shed skin cells. As with your skin, you produce new hairs to replace those you shed depending upon your age, health etc., but hair extensions don’t add to or take away from this natural process. Using both sense and cautionNow, with that being said, don’t let knowledge of shed hairs make you unconcerned over any hairs coming from your head. Know what they are so that you can ease your mind or use caution by,
(pictured below: this is a grown out strand of extension hairs at 3 months. The little white balls on the ends are these hard beads identifying true, natural shed hairs.) Monitoring your hair thickness before and after extensions ![]() After wearing thick, voluminous hair extensions for many months, girls will automatically believe their hair is thinner when the extensions are removed. Add to that the sight of a mass of shed hairs with removal and this will only add to that perception. Having a solid measurement beforehand and photos of the natural hair prior to installing and wearing the hair extensions, will provide you with the tools to know what is really going on. This allows you to monitor your own extension hair wear, as well as a great tip for stylists with their clients. Because of reports of other hair extension methods causing hair loss and other problems, I absolutely recommend you take these before pictures and compare them to your hair upon removal of the hair extensions 3-4 months later. Also, you can place all of your hair, before applying your hair extensions, into a ponytail and measure it, either with an actual fabric measuring tape, or with a piece of ribbon or material cut at the width of your ponytail. You will always feel your hair is thinner after removing and having that measurement is the true test to how, or if, your hair has thinned at all. Because we’ve had such impressive reports of thicker, longer hair while wearing the MANEMAXX® hair extensions and professional wearers who have confirmed our zero damage, no breakage, no loss hair extension method, we are confident of providing the proof with tools like this, to inform and announce a very safe and non-damaging way to apply and wear hair extensions. |
Shed hairs: What they look and feel like
Natural: Shed hairs have a small, hard bead (this is a root “bulb”) at the end and in the place the hair was released by its follicle from your scalp. It may be your first response to believe this hair has been pulled out by the weight of the growth of the hair extension and the hair caught in the bonds, but this is truly not the case. You have always shed these hairs but you may have just not noticed them.

Unnatural*: Now, do know that if you are finding hairs without this hard bead, but in fact there is a sticky, soft end to the hair, this is a living root and not a shed hair. If this happens, change what you are doing to your hair. Broken hairs will have no tips, no bulbs, hard or soft. *Please note this is only added for education and has never been an issue with the hair extension wear associated with our hair extension products. We are noted by far too many professional hair extension users and testers that this product is absolutely damage free and has never caused any kind of unnatural hair loss.:)
