Fixing hair extension tangles and matting
Important Pre-application Steps: Your hair extension pre-application steps are always just as important as your application steps and essential for your best hair extension wear. You don’t want to rush into your hair extension install without having prepared your hair ahead of time. Here's what you need to do!

Your pre-application steps are always just as important as your application steps. You don’t want to rush into your hair extension install without having prepared your hair ahead of time.

Preparing For Your Hair Extension Application

  • Clarify or your own hair thoroughly and rinse well. You may shampoo your extension hair BUT not with a clarifying cleanser. (If there is any heavy, seemingly oily sheen to the extension hair you are using, it is advised you clean it before applying. Dirty hair or oils may negatively effect your bonds.
  • Hair that is not pre-bundled should be measured to make very small bundles when cutting from the weft.  Get a ruler! 1/4 inch thick bundles are ideal for using your MANEMAXX® System.
  • Don’t let your extension strands get turned around when applying. This causes tangling.
  • Do prepare your own hair, and wavy/curly extension hair, with a flat iron.  this will help you line up of your bundles as well as keep strays from getting into your bonds.

IMPORTANT! To ensure no tangles or matting throughout your hair extension wear, do not ever sleep with wet or damp hair! Do not wash your extensions in clarifying shampoo or shampoos which contain sulfates.

A flat iron prior to hair extension application will eliminate matting at the bonds.

A flat iron prior to hair extension application will eliminate matting at the bonds. This way each hair was nice and straight to line the extension up neatly and not allow kinked hairs to interfere with getting the extension lined up as best as possible.

I highly recommend this method of pre-application for any hair texture. Even if your hair is wavy or curly, straighten just the first 2 inches at your root, 1/4 inch from your scalp. Do this with your wavy or curly extension hair, too. Flatten it just a couple inches and where you will be dipping and attaching.  Immediately after your complete application you can use a spray bottle of clean water to reactivate your curls. The water won’t harm your bonds at all.

After using a flat iron prior to hair extension application.

After using a flat iron prior to hair extension application.  I found my ironed install is wearing beautifully compared to the ones where I did not use the flat iron. It seems the method of straightening my hair prior to applying the hair extensions has solved my issue with tangling strands.

I’m super pleased and it certainly makes wearing my hair extensions far more enjoyable.

If you don’t have a flat-iron, and are serious about your hair extension application and wear, you'll want to get one. You can find them for under $15 at any drugstore.
